Greek Island Composite

The Greek Islands composite panels were created by using fragments of old embroideries to create new patterns. As Greek and ottoman embroideries often have large bare areas, those parts often deteriorated while the embroidered pieces remained intact, so the composites recycled the embroidered parts in a new imaginative way. Often the fragments at the center are newer than the fragments circulating them. They can also combine embroideries from different regions and islands.

This composite features mainly borders of Ottoman ritual towels with floral vines or flowers in vases the most common design elements
