Diamond Pattern Bargello Panel

Bargello embroidery is named for the Bargello palace in Florence where a series of chair covers with a flame stitch design from the 17th century are the first known example of this type of work. Traditionally worked in wool or silk on canvas and using counted satin stitch, Bargello needlework is remarkably durable and as such well suited for upholstery, pillows and even carpets. The stitches are laid in mathematical pattern to create motifs. Designs are usually geometric but can also resemble stylized flowers or fruits. Bargello work tends to be very colorful, like this example that uses diamond shape patterning in yellow, blue,red and white.
