Pleated Wool Skirt

Skirt composed of two woven wool panels that are stitched together lengthwise, then pleated and finally ornamented with silver ribbon embroidery in an abstracted floral design. The origin is the Mehenditi region in the Oltenia province of Rumania. It is worn on festive occasions together with either a blouse similarly decorated or with a white peasant blouse embroidered in polychrome silk. You would expect this combination to be garish but somehow it all works well.Please see images form books illustrating both.
