Mola Cloth

An early mola cloth decorated with zoomorphic shapes.

The Cuna Indians of Panama developed a unique type of applique, the mola cloth, done mostly in small rectangles that are used as front pieces for their blouses. Originally molas were made in few colors, one fabric superimposed on the other with the upper one cut and sewn down. Later versions get more intricate, using more layers and sophisticated designs.
