Judith and Holofernes Tapestry Fragment

This fragment depicts Judith holding the head of Holofernes and was probably part of a border for a larger wall tapestry. Figural borders of this style and color scheme began to appear in Brussels around 1480 and were woven from cartoons that were used repeatedly with various center panels. The top and right borders were added after this scene was removed from the original tapestry that would have been commissioned for the home of a wealthy patron.
