Syrian Bath Robe

This Syrian bath robe falls in line with a Syrian urban tradition of quilting coats for women and girls. These coats are made from satin silk of solid color and are lined with padded cotton. The technique known as ‘trapunto’ and consists of layers of cloth being laid on top of each other and tacked together with cotton padding to provide warmth. Running or back stitch is then used to sew the layers together at the edges and intervals across the main area. This holds the filling layers in place which gives a padded effect. The rows of stitching are sewn in decorative geometric forms such as chevrons or zigzags and thus provide the decorative element.

This coat has an unbleached cotton inner with a pastel blue outer made from satin silk. There are repeating chevron and X patterns throughout the coat.
