Suzanni with Diagonal Grid
The field of this suzanni is dominated by a grid of stylized rosette blossoms. They are divided by straight vines of smaller flowers and bright green leaves. The field is framed by a pair of thin red lines enclosing a very slender floral scroll. All vegetal dyes with the black typically deteriorated. Couching stitch and ladder stitch variants. The ground strips are 13″ wide and there are 5 of them. Their width, the off registry and the dyes all indicate that this was piece was not commissioned production of an urban shop but rather an early home made heirloom.
