Striped Silk Sash
Originating in Syria, this sash or scarf is made of fine silk that is woven to create multi-colored stripes. The length is too short to have been worn as a traditional waist sash on a man, so this piece may have been made for a woman’s waist, or to be worn as a head or neck scarf.
The fringe at the ends are not continuous threads from the warp – they are knotted on to the finished piece. They are, however, the same color and thread as the rest of the piece.
