Silk Furisode Kimono

A furisode is a kimono that is characterized by its long, fluttering sleeves and would be worn by a young, unmarried woman. This maroon, silk furisode kimono is decorated with sailboats with  the sails providing the ground for the floral motifs.

Like other Japanese textiles, this kimono is decorated in multiple techniques. First it is printed and brocaded, then the white sails are decorated in a paste-resist dying technique known as yuzen (Japanese for batik). On top of all these there are painted details.
