Ralli Quilt Backing
Ralli quilts originate in southern Pakistan and neighboring western India. The quilts incorporate patchwork, applique and embroidery into designs that are reminiscent of old local pottery ornamentation. The backing of the ralli quilts often relates to the pattern on the front, although the handwork is mostly embroidery. This fabric is commercially produced patterned silk with a grid design containing women in a garden setting and men smoking huka, with a similar border design against a dark blue ground. All covered with a running stitch embroidery in red and yellow.
