This textile is a 19th Century Japanese silk brocade obi fragment. The motif is a stylized dragon spewing flames. There is a pavilion with waves motif in roundels.
Obi was initially used in the kabuki in a thinner belt style, as the obi became wider by wearers it became fashionable with the populace. The obi represents politeness and elegance.
