Embroidered Robe

Semi formal robe of a nonofficial Manchu woman. Full length garment with front overflap closing on the right, fastened with five loop and gilt metal ball toggle buttons and wide sleeves with turned-back cuffs and side vents.The design consists of silk embroidery, executed in satin stitch, with couched metallic thread and French knot work on the sleeve bands. The dark blue silk ground is decorated with scattered butterflies and floral sprigs, all atop a celestial landscape with waves and mountains and edged with floral ribbon. The baby blue sleeve bands are decorated with darker blue embroidered flowers and butterflies. Lined with light blue patterned silk.
