Embroidered Man’s Shoes

Pair of leather and textile shoes with intricate embroidery in polychrome silk, metallic thread and gold sequins. Each depicting a peacock with a spread tail seen from the front, surrounded by dense floral ornamentation.The chainstitch work is applied onto a crimson silk ground which in turn covers coarse cotton. Lined and soled with leather.Safe to assume that the wearer was a very wealthy man as the work is of such high quality.

Circa: Early 19th C.

Condition: The crimson silk is worn and partially missing along the outer edge of the soles . Some discoloration to the embroidery. Good
