19th Century Chinese Cut Velvet Floor Spread

Cut Velvet Floor Spread

This is a cut velvet floor spread made in China in the 19th century. It is made out of cut silk velvet and metal thread.

This carpet was woven with a dark gray silk and metal-thread ground, voided to reveal red and light gray scrolling foliage and lotus flowers. Three of the four sides have a border with red dragons. Directional floor spreads like this one were typically used in a setting that included a throne, which would have been placed on the side without a border.
