Chairman Mao Banner
This is an embroidered banner featuring a full bodied life-sized image of the architect of the Cultural Revolution, Mao Tse Tung. It has a stern faced Chairman Mao, in his green modern Chinese tunic suit that has become known as the Zhongshan suit. The textile is a late life portrait of Chairman Mao, and it has him holding a brush writing on paper. Its manufactured date, August 1967, is shown in the bottom right in red.
This piece is embroidered in loopstitch with polychorome cotton embroidery in black, red, and green on linen. There is some age-toning throughout the piece, but it is in overall good condition. There is only a single loose thread and all of the discoloration is consistent with age.
