Ewe Waist Wrap

This Ewe waist wrap was made by an Ewe artist, in Ghana in the early 20th century. It is made out of cotton.

The Ewe people of west Africa are spread from Ghana to Nigeria. Most of them are settled in Nigeria, a country reputed to be home to the best male weavers in Africa. Ewe weavers make these sorts of waist cloths, as well as Ashanti Kente cloth. Both styles are strip-woven, with alternating weft-facing and warp-facing blocks that produce a checkered field, but Kente cloth is made out of silk and rayon, whereas Ewe cloth is made out of cotton.
