Kre Alang Sarong

This kre alang sarong was made in Sumbawa, Indonesia in the 19th century out of cotton and with a supplementary weft weave of metallic thread.

Songket is a type of brocade weaving with metallic thread practiced by textiles artists in the Indonesian islands most affected by Malay and Bugis Islamic immigration, like Sumbawa. The island of Sumbawa, east of Lombok, has an Islamic mercantile history and its textile artists make a unique form of songket called kre aland.

This sumptuous kre alang sarong likely would have been worn by a male dignitary.
