Indigo Shibori Panel

Tie-dying, or “shibori,” dates back to the eighth century in Japan.  Shibori uses the plant-based indigo dye. The floral design is achieved by using  a variety of techniques. The stem and large leaf outlines are made using the ori-Nui shibori technique, which is when a running stitch would be pulled to gather the fabric before dying. The top semi-circular shapes are created using arashi shibori, which is when the fabric is secured around a pole with string and dyed. The small flowers and leaves are made using kanoko, which is when small gathers are strategically bound and knotted.
