Hmaram Mizo Skirt

Mizoram is a state in northeastern India that is the home to Mizo tribes. The Mizo people are known for their artistry, including basket weaving, bamboo work, and textile weaving. The weaving was usually done by women, and they took inspiration from their surroundings. This piece in particular has the Kawkpuizikzial motif, which was inspired by the Kawkpui (Cyathea chinensis), an edible fern.

The Hmaram was and is a popular article of clothing for Mizoram women. It was a small skirt, and is worn by being wrapped around the waist and tucked in on one side. It was worn with a white blouse for ceremonies, festivals, or special events. It is made of cotton and dyed with natural indigo.
