Buddhist Priest Mantle (kesa)

Originally developed out of necessity, poor Buddhist monks utilized old remnants of material cut into squares and joined to form a panel with a new pattern. Eventually these pieces evolved into quite splendid and opulent creations. Used to distinguish the followers of Buddha, these garments were worn draped over the left shoulder.
