Waziri Shawl

This shawl was made in Waziristan in the early 20th century out of cotton and silk. Waziristan is in the Northeast province of Pakistan, a remote area bordering Afghanistan. The local weaving tradition often combines silk and cotton in striped designs. Weavers usually design these textiles to have mostly dark indigo cotton grounds with more minor bright silk accents. Makers will sometimes add some embroidery to the finished textile. Waziri shawls are worn by men and women.

The Textile Museum of Canada has a similar shawl in their collection.
